North access road into BAE Systems’ major transformation project completed

One of the main access routes into BAE Systems’ multi-million pound transformation project in Bishopton has today (Friday 21 December) been completed on time and within budget.

The construction of the North Access Road has been delivered by Raynesway Construction and will link the development to the existing A8 on Greenock Road via a new roundabout. The road will be one of two main access routes into the recently named Dargavel Village development.

The £2.5 million contract has also included the installation of new water drainage systems, traffic calming features and utilities such as gas, water, power and telecommunications as well as a total of 1.5km of new road and pedestrian pathways.

Work began on the North Access Road in June 2012 with more than 50 members of Raynesway Construction staff working on the site to ensure the project was completed within the planned budget and schedule and with minimum disruption to the community and impact on traffic flow through Bishopton.

Rock excavated during the works was recycled and reused to create the road foundations, reducing both the need for imported materials and helping to minimise the number of vehicles on the local roads around Bishopton.

The North Access Road layout is part of ongoing work by BAE Systems as part of its 15-year commitment to transform an 1800-acre site in Bishopton into a thriving community of homes, recreational facilities and commercial and community buildings.

Lynda Johnstone, Bishopton Project Director for BAE Systems, said: "The completion of the North Access Road will provide one of two convenient access routes into the site.

“The development is already taking shape with construction of the first phase of housing expected to begin by the end of the year, which will see around 500 new homes built on the site. The new road layout will help to integrate those moving into the area with the existing Bishopton community.”

Stephen Scott, Managing Director, Raynesway Construction said: “We are delighted to be working so closely with BAE Systems to help achieve its ambitions on what is an important and exciting scheme. The improvements made so far are significant and will assist in the wider regeneration of the area.”

Work is also well underway to establish the South Access Road, which will link the development to the A8 via Old Greenock Road at the southern point of the site and includes the construction of a bridge over the railway line. A new junction off the M8 is also planned as part of a later phase of the overall programme of works.
